SP1.2.8 Applying Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory Improves Medical Student Confidence in Reviewing Post-Operative Patients

Abstract Aims To see if a structured teaching programme designed according to Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory could be applied improve medical student confidence in reviewing post-operative general surgery patients. Methods Post-final examination students at UK university agreed participate the educational pilot 2019 (n=18). The cohort were interviewed evaluate any anxieties around undertaking FY1 surgical posts and responses grouped thematically; patient emerged as dominant concern. Subsequently, four-part session was move learner through ‘Abstract Conceptualisation’ (Before Bedside), ‘Active Experimentation’ (At ‘Concrete Experience’ (After Bedside) ‘Reflective Observation’ (Expert Example). Pre- post-intervention interviews Likert scale-based surveys employed impact (Kirkpatrick Level One). Results 18/18 (100%) participants reported feeling more confident after intervention. Learner feedback included “very little of subject covered previously so helpful get approach”, “useful discuss history before patient” “observing consultant post-op review end really cemented what we learning”. Conclusions A graded approach developing assessing patient, proposed by Theory, seems offer useful method is valued learner. Ongoing expansion this will further its impact.
